When can my child start school?

Most children start school in the September following their fourth birthday. However, by law a child does not have to start school until the term following their fifth birthday.

Child's Birthday Start school
1 September 2019 to 31 August 2020 September 2024
1 September 2020 to 31 August 2021 September 2025
1 September 2021 to 31 August 2022 September 2026

All reception age children are offered full time places when they start at our school. If parents want their child to attend part time from September or to delay entry until later on in the academic year, please contact us directly to arrange this.

How to apply for a place at this school

The deadline for children to join our school in September 2025 has now passed.

Wiltshire residents should apply online here:  Apply for a School Place

Non-Wiltshire residents should apply to their own local authority for a place in this school. This also applies to families planning to move to the area (except service personnel, see below).

In the event of oversubscription, we will apply our Admissions Policy's criteria for determining priority of admission (see Admissions Policy on our Policy Page).

Dinton Primary School reserves the right to request parents to verify their child’s birth date by producing a birth certificate or other official document.

In Year Transfers and transferring from another school

To transfer your child to Dinton Primary School, you should apply online through Wiltshire Council using this link: Online application form for In Year Transfer

To transfer your child to a school outside Wiltshire, you should contact the admissions authority for the new school to clarify the admissions process.

We currently have space in all year groups. We have space for 15 pupils per year group. Parents of children currently in Primary Education need to complete an In-year access form via the Wiltshire Council website.

Wiltshire Council School Admissions

Deferred entry and part time attendance below statutory school age

A child may start at the School in the academic year in which he/she reaches the age of 5. Where the child has not yet reached statutory school age (5 years old), the child is entitled to a full-time place and parents may choose for their child to attend full time. Alternatively, parents may choose for their child to attend part time until their child attains compulsory school age. If parents do not consider their child is ready to start school then they may defer entry altogether to later in the school year but not beyond the point at which the child reaches compulsory school age or not beyond the beginning of the final term in the school year (whichever is the sooner).

Appeals Procedure - In-Year Transfer Applications

a. Parents have a right of appeal to an independent panel against any decision made by or on behalf of the Admissions Authority as to the school which education is to be provided for their child.

b. All appeals will be heard in accordance with the timescales which have been determined and are explained in the School Admissions Appeals Code.

c. Information about the appeal procedure will be provided where a place at one or more of the preferred schools has been refused. Parents should visit www.wiltshire.gov.uk or contact the Customer Services Team (01225 713010) to obtain an appeals form which should be returned to the Democratic and Members Service team (D&M) at County Hall, Trowbridge. The clerk to the appeals panel will be provided by the D&M Service team.

d. Parents who have appealed unsuccessfully can reapply for a place at the same school in a later academic year and have a right of appeal if unsuccessful.

e. Where there have been material changes in circumstances in the same academic year and a repeat application is considered and again refused, the parents will have the right to a fresh appeal. f. Please note appeals are only heard in term time.
